Digital transformation is everywhere. Infrastructure is expanding and customers digital experience expectations are growing continuously, demanding that companies must be innovative, agile and follow and better yet, to make trends. What it means for IT? Increased pressure to run existing operations smoothly while supporting growth and lead innovations. Is it achievable? Yes, but only if companies automate and orchestrate manual work, giving experts sufficient time to do strategic things, those which brings value to the company. Network infrastructure, related systems and relevant professionals are not excluded.
As Network Services Orchestrator (NSO) is industry-leading software for automating services across traditional and virtualized networks enabling companies’ best employees will be able to focus on smart things, and the tool will take care of service configuration.
Facilitating daily operations
NSO facilitates daily operations and service provisioning by eliminating some of the most common obstacles. Experts don't need to be involved to troubleshoot simple configuration mistakes because it is easy to fix problems, change service parameters on the fly, try provisioning again. Furthermore, no need for determining hundreds of parameters in advance each time service provisioning have to be done, such as IDs, names, addresses, VLANs, etc. And, one orchestrator is used for whole infrastructure - any vendor, any device, as many nodes as you need, any topology, any set of commands is needed.
NSO does not orchestrate network device configuration, it orchestrates end-to-end services. The difference is huge and particularly pronounced in complex environments. Instead device configuration, provisioning start with service modeling with YANG. Configuration logic based on NetConf is used to ensure consistency, cleanup in case of failure, and independence of order-of-operations. These are standardized methods and fully integrated with other orchestration and NFV solutions. The service model is essentially simple and includes configuration of elements and their relations, and is adapted to the customer's requirements. That makes it applicable to arbitrary workflows, from initial configurations and manual interventions, to complex multi-step workflows and migrations.
Situations that benefits the most from NSO
Looking at NSO from the perspective of daily operations, following situations would benefit the most out of it:
- Lot of configuration changes on daily basis.
- Experience service problems due to incorrect or bad configurations.
- Configuration changes that have significant monetary impact.
- Experience uncontrolled and left-over configurations.
- Stuck with old inflexible configuration templates, because it would be too complex to change them now.
- Need periodic service audit.
- Most qualified engineers waste time on service provisioning and/or fixing misconfigurations.
- Hesitate to upgrade equipment or change vendor, because it would be just too hard to retrain everybody to use the new stuff.
"The solution empowers smart people to do smart thinks instead of coping with daily operations, improves customers satisfaction as services are provisioned promptly and accurately, enables complete control over provisioning environment." Ivica Gašparić, CTO, Verso Altima Group.

Cisco® Network Services Orchestrator (NSO) enabled by Tail-f® is an industry-leading orchestration platform for hybrid networks. It provides comprehensive lifecycle service automation to enable you to design and deliver high-quality services faster and more easily.
The network is a foundation for revenue generation. Therefore, service providers must implement network orchestration to simplify the entire lifecycle management for services. For today’s virtualized networks, this means transparent orchestration that spans multiple domains in your network and includes network functions virtualization (NFV) and software-defined networking (SDN) as well as your traditional physical network and all its components
NSO is a model driven (YANG) platform for automating your network orchestration. It supports multi-vendor networks through a rich variety of Network Element Drivers (NEDs).
